DOVER GUNS
FIRE OPENED ON ENEMY CONVOY ON FAR SIDE OF CHANNEL. RATHER FEEBLE GERMAN REPLY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) RUGBY, July 5. Guns in the Dover area opened fire early today, starting a duel, lasting for about two hours, with the long-range guns on the French coast. Two British guns—believed to be aiming at a convoy of enemy ships off Calais — fired at two-minute intervals for fifteen minutes before the Germans responded. Then only one German gun responded; spasmodically. The British salvoes increased to three and four, while the Germans fired mainly signal shells. Some Gorman shells fell in the vicinity of Dover, their explosions shaking the coast. .
