SMASHING ATTACKS
ON ITALIAN ISLANDS BECOMING MORE & MORE INTENSE. ALLIES TAKE HEAVY TOLL OF AXIS FIGHTERS. LONDON, July 5. Al tacks on Sicily, Sardinia and Southern Italy are growing more and more intense. Yesterday it was Sicily’s turn. Jf. was the best day yet in the great offensive against the enemy’s island bases. Heavy bombers, medium bombers and fighter-bombers fought their way through bitter opposition to reach their objectives and took a heavy toll of the enemy aircraft sent up to intercept them. The large number of enemy fighters in the air showed how desperately the enemy was trying to stave off the attacks The enemy's attempt proved ccstly and ineffective.
The North African Air Force destroyed 43 enemy planes while Spitfires frem Malta accounted for six more, bringing the day’si bag over Sicily to 49. In addition, a number of Axis aircraft were smashed up on the ground. The Allied losses were 1G aircraft but this included operations on the previous night, in which raids were made on towns in Sicily and on targets near Rome.
