ATLANTIC KILL
NEW ZEALAND PILOT SINKS U-BOAT FIRST SUCCESS CREDITED OFFICIALLY. TO PLANE FROM CONVERTED CARRIER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 5. A New Zealander, Sub-Lieutenant W. G. Bowles, R.N.Z.V.R., who was piloting a fighter plane from the British aircraft-carrier Archer, had a hand in the first sinking of a U-boat officially credited solely to planes from converted merchantmen aircraft-car-riers. The action took place in the Atlantic recently.
The U-boat was the fourth sighted by planes from the Archer and was travelling at full speed toward a convoy on the surface. The plane attacked and the U-boat attempted to dive, but again came to the surface with 30ft. of its stern sticking out of the water. The U-boat’s crew manned the guns, but Bowles came up to support the first attacker. He dived on the Üboat with guns blazing and silenced the U-boat’s guns, after which the crew of the U-boat jumped into the water. The U-boat sank three minutes later.
