The Scrimgeour Incident.

The following resolution was adopted at a meeting of the New Zealand Amalgamated Engineering and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers: “That this branch of the Engineers’ Union strongly protests against the Government railroading Mr Scrimgeour into the Army, and sacking him on the eve of his going into camp, especially as this had been done by a Minister who had not been elected by the people.” Recreational Centre. An announcement was made by the President of the Wellington Y.M.C.A., Mr R. H. Nimmo, yesterday, of the hope of the Association to establish a great communal recreational centre in Wellington, as a memorial to the men of New Zealand who have fought overseas. The proposal is to establish on land adjoining the present building in Upper Willis Street a centre in which-will be incorporated an Olympic swimming pool, a solarium for heat and orthopaedic treatment and other facilities, not only for the assistance of men returning but for the recreation and physical welfare of future New Zealand youth. Venereal Disease. A full inquiry into the incidence of venereal disease in the Dominion has been completed by the Health Committee of the House of Representatives following a petition by 185 women asking for further measures to combat the disease. The committee, reporting to the House yesterday, referred the petition to the Government for favourable consideration, but stated that after an increase in 1940-41 the disease had been considerably reduced and was now well in check. One member of the committee said the evidence showed that the Dominion was not suffering from the disease to anything like the extent which many people had been led to believe.
