Carman will be an Independent candidate for the Wellington North seat at the general election. Mr C. H. Chapman (Labour) is the sitting member. Mr Carman is a Wellington-born man, in business as a bookseller. He lives at Tawa Flat. From 1935 to 1941 he was a member of the Wellington Hospital Board. He resigned from the New Zealand Labour Party in 1940 because he disagreed with its policy. Mr Carman said last night that he opposed the party politics system whereby principles and ideals were often submerged to questions of party advantage. * SOUTHERN MAORI SEAT. NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE. s (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 29. The National Party organiser for the Maori electorates Mr Vernon Thomas, has been selected as the National Party candidate for the Southern Maori seat. Mr Thomas was born at Christchurch, educated at Scots College, Wellington, and employed in the Railways and Public Works Departments. He is a direct descendant of chiefs of the Ngaitahu Tribe. NAPIER NATIONAL PARTY. BOROUGH COUNCILLOR CHOSEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, June 29. Mr M. S. Spence, public accountant and borough councillor, has been selected as the National Party candidate for the Napier seat.
