NO SHORTAGE

THE SEED POSITION. FIRMS DOING BEST TO SUPPLY ORDERS. A well-known Auckland firm of seed merchants, writing to their agents in Masterton in connection with the seed position, state: We hope you will be tolerant with us because we are doing our best, but have had many troubles to contend with, from insufficient benzine allocations to delays in the arrival of overseas seeds, and those that have been harvested and cleaned in this country; but most important of all is the labour position which is now most difficult for our trade, which must have skilled seedsmen and assistants. Many of our staff will be working overtime as many nights as their health will stand, besides Saturday morning and afternoon for the next four months, to enable you to get your seeds as soon as possible. Added to our normal business is the Government’s “Victory Garden Campaign” which is making a lot of additional work for all in the seed trade. We especially want you and your customers to realise that there is no seed shortage. The actual position is that with most of the main lines there is a surplus which we are shipping to England, and other allied nations. The only possible shortages will be with unimportant varieties which are not essential . There is no need for customers to be panicky concerning seed supplies.
