GREYTOWN
HOCKEY CLUB 1 PRESENTATION TO MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at a dance held by the Kia Kaha Hockey Club in the Odd Fellows Hall, at which a presentation was made to Misses Pat and Linden Sugrue, who are entering the war services. Mrs Brown (patron of the club) in an appropriate speech, made the presentation on behalf of the Hockey Club and the guests of the evening suitably replied. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr Len Daysh and extras were played by Misses Carter and Burch and Mr Lyster.
The gathering was a most enjoyable one and was excellently managed.
GOLF CLUB MEDAL ROUND RESULTS. The Greytown Golf Club’s medal round for Mr J. Kierhan’s trophy resulted as follows: —R. Brunton, score 85 handicap 17, total 68, 1; S. Brice, 89-18-71, 2; G. Brunton 91-15-76, 3; A. Rhodes 99-18-81; A. G. Peterson 107-24-83. Patriotic Work. Tte Grey town ladies’ committee has reported to the general patriotic committee that they had this year made 72 pairs of mittens, 45 scarves and 42 balaclavas. Parcel Funds Low. As scon as the secretary of the Greytown Patriotic Committee reported that the parcel fund finances were low, those present at the last meeting decided to hold a shop day on Friday, July 9. It is evident from the support already promised that the stalls will be well filled. Orders ■ for firewood are among the many gifts. Personal Items. Mr J. Kiernan has received word that his son, Mr Bernard Kiernan, has passed his final examination. He has been training as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm in England. Lieut. I. H. Manihera, accompanied by Messrs E. King! and C. Matthews, are at Wairou attending a conference of delegates of Tribal Committees in the Eastern (Maori electorate area. Privates W. Brown and J. Oakey are spending leave with their parents in Greytown. Fire Brigade Competitions. The Grey town Fire Brigade competitions which were held in conjunction with their dance were won by A. Woodley (wood); Mrs Harris (half sheep); and R. Murray (flour). Patriotic Committee, At a meeting of the Citizens’ Patriotic Committee, Miss M. Wood notified the committee that Mrs J. F. Thompson was willing to organise a concert, the proceeds to be devoted to the local parcels’ fund. The offer was gratefully accepted. ' The Wairarapa Racing Club was accorded a vote of thanks for having given the profits from its Easter race meeting to the Patriotic Funds. The chief | roles are in the hands of Walter Pidgeon, Sara Allgood, Roddy McDowell, Maureen O’Hara, Donald Crisp and Anna Lee.
