WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women’s ‘lnstitute at which Mrs Atkinson presided.

Mrs Arthur Warren reported on the proceedings at the Council meeting held at Carterton recently. A vote of thanks was accorded her.

Spinning wool and knitting comforts for local sailors serving in the Navy was commenced.

Competitions held during the afternoon were won by Mrs Sutton (best cooked cream crackers), with Mrs Lovegrove second. Miss Doreen Priest (best bloom), with Mrs Lovegrove second. The hostesses were Mesdames S. McIntosh and Swainson. . TRIBAL COMMITTEE EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. The Pukio Tribal Committee held a very successful euchre party and dance in the Kahutara *Hall on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance considering the unfavourable climatic' conditions. The prizes at euchre were won as follows:—Ladies: Mrs Bragg, 1; Mrs Carter, 2. Men: Mr C. Corlet, 1; Mr L. Bridgewater, 2. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs Watson and Mr Radd. Mr R. Piripi won the dinner competition, the proceeds from which realised a record amount. Miss McGregor delighted the audience with two dances, while the Pukio juveniles again showed their undoubted ability with their poi dances. The dance music was supplied by Carter’s Paraparaumu Dance Band. Messrs Halidone and W. Davidson were efficient M.C’s. The members of the committee are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts. Rivers Bank to Bank. The weather during the greater part of last week was boisterous and a considerable amount of rain fell. The Ruamahanga and its tributaries were running bank to bank. It was fortunate that the rain ceased at the weekend, otherwise some damage might have resulted.

Meeting of Tribal Committee. It is understood that a conference of delegates from the Tribal Committees throughout the Eastern Maori electorate is tp be held at Wairoa shortly. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs R. Matenga, who had been visiting their daughter at Otaki, have returned home. Mrs J. A. Sutherland is visiting relatives at the Lower Hutt. Miss N. Ahipene, Wellington, was a visitor to Pirinoa at the weekend. Mr Heta Tawhiri is on a visit to Halcom'be. Mr and Mrs Hill visited Pirinoa at the weekend.
