EAST ASIA COMMAND
SPECULATION IN UNITED STATES. APPOINTMENT OF MACARTHUR THOUGHT POSSIBLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 21. General MacArthur may be appointed head of the East Asia Command which, following, upon the new appointments of Field Marshal Wavell and General Auchinleck, will soon be created to direct a combined offensive against Japan. This forecast is made by the Washington correspondent of the United Press of America. Other commentators expect that Marshal Chiang Kai-shek will be appointed to this command. However, the United Press correspondent says that high United Nations officials have revealed that a movement is under way to appoint an American general as supreme commander, a British officer as commander of the sea and air forces, and a Chinese general as the chief of staff. Those favouring General MacArthur state that the commander must possess not only great prestige, but also the ability to direct vaslt combined operations. “Mr Curtin’s recent statement that Australia is now less threatened by invasion indicates that General MacArthur is no longer urgently needed there,” the correspondent adds.
