VETERAN TRAINER’S DEATH.

The death on Sunday of Mr T. F. Quinlivan breaks another link in the chain of old-time racing trainers. Mr Quinlivan, who was born in Havelock. South Island, was in his seventy-eighth year. In his early ’teens the late Mr Quinlivan rode many winners for his father and other owners. He won the first race staged by the Woodville District Jockey Club. Before settling in Hastings he owned and trained a fair number of winners from the Woodville district. Arriving there in the late ’nineties, he was appointed private trainer to the late Mr E. J. Watt, for whom he won a great number of races. Only a few years had elapsed before Tom Quinlivan was known both in Australia and New Zealand.
During most of his training career Mr Quinlivan acted as private trainer to Mr E. J. Watt. Mr W. G. Stead, Messrs E. and V. Riddiford and Mrs M. A. Perrj| His winners totalled over 600, an exceptional record for a private trainer. The principal winners turned out by the late Mr Quinlivan were Sasanof, Coalition. King Billy. Kilindini, Downham, Sea Pink, Demagogue, Aborigine, Maori King. Crenides, Boomerang, Ventura. Wimmera. Midnight Sun. Bridge, Palaver, Indian Queen, Simonides, Royal Scotch, Cheddar, Nobility, Melodeon, Elocution, Lovematch, Roseshoot. Tradewind, Gazely, Archlight, St. Mark, Bunting and Bird of Passage.
