SERVICES APPRECIATED
EX-CHAIRMAN OF COLLEGE BOARD. MR W. R. NICOL’S WORK EULOGISED. Warm appreciation of the services of the former chairman of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors, Mr W. R. Nicol, was expressed at last night’s meeting of the board and it was unanimously decided to place on record reference to Mr Nicol’s sterling work since 1935 and particularly so during his period of chairmanship. In moving a motion on those lines the chairman, Mr A. Owen Jones, said Mr Nicol had been connected with the college since its inception, and had put in hard work in the interest of the board. That was particularly so since the outbreak of war when the college lost nearly 75 per cent of its senior teachers.- It was no light work getting staff to replace those who had gone.
Mr Nicol thanked Mr Jones for his remarks. Like other members of the board he was there to do his best in the interests of the children of the district and particularly of the. college. The amalgamation of the two schools had involved difficulty. It was an experiment in co-education based on the recommendation of the Atmore Commission and so far it had not proved the success that had been hoped. However, the board had a long way to go yet. Mr Nicol said he had not always had co-operation but had done his best.
Mr F. J. Gair, Acting-Principal, said he had received one hundred per cent co-operation from Mr Nicol and other board members but Mr Nicol’s help had been exceptional.
