MASTERTON FIGURES SUBMERGED IN WELLINGTON’S. REPEATED PROTESTS BY MAYOR. Repeated representations have been macle by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, against the policy of the Post and Telegraph Department in including Wairarapa figures in Wellington returns. Mr Jordan said that at meetings of the National Loan Committee in Wellington, prior to the launching of the Lib.erty Loan campaign, he had asked that moneys raised in this district should be credited to the district and not swamped in the Wellington figures. There were certain difficulties, as a number of people in this district had business relations with firms in Wellington, through whom financial arrangements were made. All the same it should not be difficult to have contributions by Wairarapa district residents separated from the Wellington figures. That was being done to a certain extent, but only where the contribution was so earmarked by the Wairarapa. resident concerned. The whole thing, said Mr Jordan, was wrapped up in the fact that this district did not have a Chief Postmaster. “What that has got to do with the question I am at a loss to understand.”
For many years, Mr Jordan added, he had repeatedly asked the authorities for the Post Office Savings Bank figures to be shown separately, but without result. The official returns gave figures for places less than half the size of Masterton.
