CARTERTON

WOMEN’S DIVISION DANCE SOLDIERS PRESENTED WITH PARCELS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A dance held in the State Theatre on Saturday night by the Women s Division of the Farmers' Union was largely attended and proved most enjoyable. The proceeds are for the overseas soldiers’ parcel fund. Bright music was supplied by Mr T. Udy s orchestra and extras were played by Miss J. Hall and Messrs Udy and S. Hemi. The duties of M.C. were efficiently carried out by Mr P. Beere. A number of men on leave in the district were present as guests and were presented with parcels of knitted woollen comforts. Mr D. Walsh, representing the Farmers’ Union, introduced Mrs H. Hodder, who extended good wishes to the men on behalf cf the Women's Division. The recipients of parcels were Lieutenant Renall, Sergeant Martin, Privates Bruce, Davidson, George, Sage and Tpr. Goodin. Lieutenant Renall returned' thanks c<n behalf of the men. Supper was served by a capable ladies' committee. Men on leave who were not present

to receive their parcels will be given them at the gathering to be held in the State Theatre tonight. The Women's Division will hold another dance in a fortnight's time. The Division has done splendid work and no member of the forces has left the district without receiving a parcel of comforts knitted by industrious and willing workers.

LABOUR PARTY ENJOYABLE 'CARD TOURNEY. Thocr was a fair attendance at the weekly card tournament held by the local branch of the Labour Party on Saturday evening. The prizes were won as follows:— Ladies, Mrs H. Goodin 1, Mrs C. Jensen 2. Men, Mr C. Woodbury 1, Mrs Calwell (acting) 2.

Service Men to be Entertained

Ten Carterton members of the Armed Forces will be entertained by the Carterton Patriotic Committee in the State Theatre, Holloway Street, tonight. Dancing will commence at 8 o’clock, and during the evening the Mayoress will present gifts to the guests. The supper arrangements will be controlled by a ladies' committee, and the dance music will be provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton's orchestra.

The settlers of Belvedere and district will entertain Privates W .R. Sage and P. Thomas at a social gathering in the school on Thursday next. Mrs Rogers will play the dance music, and a firstclass supper will be provided. Motor Collision. A head-on collision occurred at Memorial Square intersection last evening between two cars. The only damage was a dented mudguard to one car.

REGENT THEATRE “THE GREAT LIE.” The outstanding drama, "The Great Lie,” will be finally shown tonight at the Regent Theatre. The principal characters are portrayed by Bette Davis, George Brent and Mary Astor.
