WOMEN’S DIVISION PAHAUTEA BRANCH. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Pahautea branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs Ross presiding over a fair attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Sadler, Parker, McKay and Beattie. Knitted ' caps, mittens and string gloves for merchant seamen were received. Mrs Corlet gave a demonstration on the making of a dressing gown with odd pieces of material. Competitions were won as follow:— Best variety of biscuits: Miss Frew. Flowers: Mrs Connell 1. Mrs Bentley 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Corlet and Cade. League of Mothers. There was a good attendance at a meeting of the League of Mothers yesterday afternoon, including members from Greytown and one member from Johnsonville, who were given a cordial ■ welcome.
The president (Mrs Arch. Clark) introduced the speaker, the Rev B. J. Williams, of the Mission to Seamen, Wellington, who, in an interesting address, outlined the activities of the Mission, especially mentioning the work of the women who entertained the seamen when, in port, this touch of home life being greatly appreciated by the seamen. The speaker made particular reference to the men of the Merchant Navy, who, untrained for warfare, showed such courage in the face of danger and discomfort in carrying essential supplies overseas. Several members have offered to entertain men of the Merchant Navy in their homes for weekends. A motion of condolence with Mrs L. B. Maunsell in her bereavement was passed by members. The hostesses were Mesdames S. Howel], R. Kelly and S. Kilby. COSY THEATRE “TORPEDO BOAT" 1 Tonight’s programme will be headed by two excellent pictures—" Torpedo Boat" (a thrilling story featuring Richard Arlen and Jean Parker) and “The Great Impersonation” (an outstanding drama with Ralph Bellamy and Evelyn Ankers in the chief roles).
