COUNTY COUNCIL

WAIRARAPA SOUTH INVESTMENT IN LIBERTY LOAN. RATES FOR ENSUING YEAR. (“Times-Age”. Special.) Councillor A. E. Reid presided over the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council at ' Carterton yesterday. There were also present: Councillors D. McGregor, A. McGregor, R. O. Rayner, L. S. Gallon, Jas. K. Strang, F. C. Cameron, F. Court, and E. W. Allen. Prior to commencement of business, the chairman made reference to the death of Councillor C. A. Cameron, who. until December last, had been ac-. lively associated with the council foi--28 years without a break. Reference was also made to the death of Mrs Allen. Members stood in silence for a few moments out of respect to the memories of deceased.

The treasurer reported a credit balance of £6203 at the bank.

! The meeting decided that the County ‘Clerk, Mr E. T. Beaven, attend the > County Clerks’ Conference, and also the County Conference to be held in Wellington at the end of July. The council unanimously decided that the sum of £4OOO be invested in the Third New Zealand Liberty War Loan.

A letter was received from the Fea- ' therston County Council asking for the support of the Wairarapa South County in connection with the erection of a crematorium in a central position in the Wairarapa. It was decided to support the proposal. It was also decided that the county and borough representatives meet and discuss the question of a site.

It was resolved to give Mrs W. Campin notice that the council intends to fill in a drain near her property on Waihakeke Road.

A committee consisting of the chairman, Councillors Allen and Court, was appointed to report on work required to be carried out at the headworks of the Taratahi .water-race. It was resolved to give notice to strike the following rates the county:—General rate, 1 7-8 d; hospital, a d; Taratahi water-race maintenance, 13-20 d; Carrington water-race maintenance, 4-sd. Councillor D. McGregor gave notice to move that a finance committee be formed for the county.
