CARTERTON
LEAGUE OF MOTHERS LARGE ATTENDANCE AT MEETING (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held yesterday afternoon, over 80 members being present. Mrs H. Knutson presided as it was a members’ meeting, Mrs W. P. Williams acting as secretary. Votes of sympathy were passed to the relatives of the late Mrs E. W. Allen and Flight Observer J. V. Gustofsen.
The thought for the month was given by Mrs V. L. Robinson and the hint by Mrs A. F. Pink. Letters of thanks were read from the recipients of woollen garments and flowers.
The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs J. R. Higgs, of Featherston, who gave a very interesting talk on woman’s place in the world after the war. The responsibility was very largely with the mothers, that they create the right environment and home life, to prepare the children for today to bo good citizens of tomorrow, said thespeaker. It was only by sacrifice and still maintaining fortitude and perseverance in wartime that wc shall win the peace. The speaker, in conclusion, said: “To make a better world is to be a better person ourselves.” Mrs H. Knutson thanked the speaker who was presented with a posy. Vocal items were excellently rendered by Mrs M. Worsfold and Miss V. Sorensen, each being presented with a shoulder spray.
Mrs Every thanked Mrs Knutson and the members’ committee for having provided a very enjoyable gathering.
St. Andrew’s Manse.
Mr Andrews, building contractor of Masterton. and his staff of workmen, have made a start to re-model St. Andrew’s Manse which was badly damaged during the earthquake 12 months ago. It is intended to dismantle’ the top storey and to provide an up-to-date residence. Personal.
Mr L. H. Smart, secretary of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, has left for Hamilton, where he will spend a holiday.
Parcels for Service Men,
Tomorrow evening members of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union will hold a dance in the State Theatre, Carterton, the proceeds from which will be devoted to purchasing wool to knit woollen garments for service men and] for providing parcels for members of] the forces overseas. The purpose of the dance is a worthy one and it is hoped that there vzill be a large attendance. Udy’s Orchestra will provide the music.
REGENT THEATRE TWO BIG PICTURES.
Tonight's programme at the Regent Theatre is headed by the sensational story ‘'Sweater Girl," featuring June Preisser and Eddie Bracken. In an excellent comedy “Sweetheart of the Fleet," Joan Davis and Jinx Falkenburg have the leading roles.
