AXIS WAR INDUSTRIES
NOT MENACED BY ALLIED BOMBING ACCORDING TO BERLIN RADIO. BUT “EVIL LAMENTATIONS” REBUKED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 17. Germany is taking additional measures to protect heavy industries and workers in the Ruhr Valley from Allied bombing, according to the Berlin radio. “Allied bombing attacks against Germany's armament capacity are not worrying Berlin,” it states, * but heavy civilian losses are not being hidden. It is clear that the enemy is increasing his terror attacks against civilians because be is unable to hit war industries. The Allied air force today cannot reach Germany’s new fac toriies or a majority of the old and more important industrial works. Heavy industry is practically tied to its present location, but the attitude of the people in the bombed areas has indicated that they do not wish.to leave their homes in time of danger. Therefore Germany has undertaken precautionary measures to protect them.”
A Dortmund newspaper, quoting Gauleiter Hoffman, reveals that the R.A.F. heavy raid against Wuppertal, on the night of May 29, killed over a thousand people. Hoffman deplored “endless rumours and evil lamentations which a certain clique of intellectuals is spreading.” He said nothing unnecessary should go into letters to the front. Hoffman added that one of the most evil rumours was that which declared that parly leaders were receiving seven-fold the normal food ration.
