SCHOOL SPORTS
PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES GATHERING IN PARK TOMORROW. LARGE NUMBER OF PUPILS TAKING PART. Since the successful physical education week and combined display held in the Park during the first week in March, the Masterton Primary Schools' Sports Association has been busily engaged in organising further functions of a physical nature, and in this respect it is proposed to hold two com-bined-schools’ games afternoons, the ftrst of which is to take place tomorrow afternoon, commencing at 1 p.m. The primary object of these gatherings is to afford all the pupils from Std. 4 upwards the opportunity of taking part in, and representing their school, in some form of sport. The games have been divided into three sections, viz., basketball and organised games to be played on the Park Oval, and Rugby football at Rugby Park and on the area adjacent to the Catholic Church. In the basketball section 180 girls will be catered for on three courts, each team playing two games during the afternoon. Between the games the girls will play various games and relays allied to basketball. The remainder of the Oval has been subdivided into eight sections to accommodate 240 boys and girls comprising 16 teams to play wandering ball, prisoners’ base, skittle ball, Danish rounders, relays, circular dodge ball and long ball (2), the teams changing over every 20 minutes, except in the case of long ball, which will be for a double period. At Rugby Park six senior fifteens will be catered for, and four junior teams will play on the St. Patrick’s field.
It is proposed to carry out a modified scheme at the various schools for the junior pupils. Weekly organised games, as a major part of physical education, have become a feature in the various schools, and it is felt that by holding inter-school functions, greater zest will be added to the games, the standard of achievement will improve, friendliness will be fostered, and those pupils who have not qualified to represent their school at Rugby or basketball will be afforded an opportunity of, playing some other form of sport. The schools taking part are: Central, West. Lansdowne, Solway, Whatman, Te Ore Ore, St. Patrick's and St. Bride’s in Rugby and basketball.
Parents and friends are cordially invited to be present as very interesting and keenly contested games should be witnessed.
The association wishes to extend its sincere thanks to Messrs C. E. Daniell Ltd. (per Mr A. H. Daniell) for the generous donation of basketball poles, to Messrs J. C. Ewington Ltd. for the iron work, Mr Knowles and his staff for marking the Oval, and to the Wairarapa Rugby Union for preparing '.he necessary grounds for football. Should the weather prove unfavourable the function will be postponed until the following week.
