Fiji’s position on the 180th meridian gave the colony the honour of being the first to celebrate United Nations’ Day. From a stand in the centre of the town, the Governor. Sir Philip Mitchell, and the United States commanding general took the salute. Troops bearing the flags of the United Nations headed the march. Then came representatives of all the services, of the Emergency Reserve Corps (civil defence), patriotic organisations and representatives of the armed forces of the United States, New Zealand and Fiji.
