OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
EDUCATIONAL METHODS (To the Editor.) Sir, —In your report of the address given at last Thursday’s Rotary Club luncheon, Mr Gair admits that writing, spelling and arithmetic are below the standard of a generation ago. From the employers’ point of view the present standard of those subjects is appalling. Unfortunately Mr Gair did not mention whether he considered the present standard of grammar, history and geography lower than that of previous years. The supposedly efficient modern teacher shows consideration to his or her pupils, with the result that these three subjects at least (probably more) havd deteriorated very considerably. The benefit the pupils otherwise receive appears to be confined to missing the brutal treatment meted out to the pupils of the past. This brutal treatment made the hands uncomfortable and at times, when blisters were raised, rather painful, but ensured discipline, with the result that teachers got far better work than is the case today. — Yours, etc., EMPLOYER. Masterton, June 14.
