Miss Agnes Godfrey, of Masterton, has returned from a visit to Pahiatua. Mr and Mrs G. Wishart, Short Street, Masterton, have received a cable from their two sons, Driver D. D. Wishart and Pte. A. G. Wishart, who are overseas, stating that they were safe and well.

A London message announces the death on active service of Rear-Ad-miral J. C. Demeric, who served in the New Zealand Division for about four years. He died after collapsing at his desk at the Admiralty.

An official Air Force casualty list states that Pilot Officer Max W. Dixon, son of Mr and Mrs P. W. Dixon, is presumed to have died on December 6, 1942. Pilot Officer Dixon was buried in the English section of the Montcornet cemetery, Ardennes, north of Rheims, France.

Mr H. P. Hugo was re-elected chairman of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust last night. Mr Hugo has been chairman for the past five years and trustees paid a tribute to his sterling services. Messrs C. E. Grey and H. H. Daniell, who were nominated for the office, declined on account of other calls on their time.

A meeting of delegates of National Party branches in the Franklin district was held at Pukekohe when Mr J. N. Massey, sitting member for the electorate, was approved as candidate for the party in the coming general election. The meeting agreed that Mr Massey should have freedom of action in accordance with Mr Holland’s public statements that he would support the party on all motions of confidence. The secretary of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust (Mr A. W. McKenzie) reported at last night’s meeting of the Trust that Messrs H. P. Hugo, R. Krahagen and R. Page had been returned as trustees unopposed for a further term. Mr E. G. Eton congratulated the trustees on being returned unopposed, and said it was an indication of public confidence. He referred particularly to Mr R. Krahagen's faithful service over a long period of years.

The death has occurred of Mr Robert Fletcher Gregg, a well-known pastoralist of southern Hawke’s Bay. Mr Gregg was born in Lyttelton in 1881. He was one of the original settlers of the Tiratu Block when it was opened 24 years ago. He was one of the founders of the Tiratu dairy factory, being its first chairman. He was chairman of the Tiratu-Tipapakuku Patriotic Society, a member of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Production Council, the War Relief Association, the dairy committee of the Farmers’ Union, and the Returned Services Gift Stock Committee. The funeral of the late Mr James Phillips took place yesterday afternoon, there being a large attendance. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich. The Stronvar Home Guard, commanded by Lieut. O. Sykes and Lieut. G. Elliott, were present. Among others, wreaths were sent by the chairman and councillors of the Masterton County Council, the staff of the Masterton County Council and the Wainui-oru Home Guard. The pallbearers were Messrs H. G. Alexander, A. H. Marsh (R.S.A.), Lieut. O. Sykes and Lieut. G. Elliot (Stronvar Home Guard), Messrs W. I. Armstrong and J. Mackley (Masterton County Council). The “Last Post” was sounded by Bugler J. Brett.
