LIKELY TO BE BRIEF
PARLIAMENTARY SESSION WITH ELECTION IN PROSPECT PROPOSED LEGISLATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. There is a general opinion that the present session of Parliament will end within the next three weeks, with a short recess before a brief session in August and then the dissolution. Apart from the belief that there will not be sufficient business to hold the House together in a continuous sitting, there is the restiveness which will increasingly possess members as the weeks go by. Few, if any, will want to prolong debates on the Budget, and the departmental estimates while their opponents in tjie contest are free to carry on campaigning in preparation for the general election in September. It is believed that only the Budget debate and consideration of the estimates will be taken during the present, sifting and that legislation will be deferred for a subsequent short session with the dissolution in time to allow a few weeks for an intensive campaign. The Government measures expected to be brought down are amendments to the pensions legislation to give effect to the increases in pensions outlined in the Budget, and a Bill dealing with land values. The latter measure may be highly controversial, as it is known that Government members are considerably concerned over rising land and property values. A policy of stabilisation of these values is said to be a desired objective.
