THIRD LIBERTY LOAN CONFIDENCE IN OUTCOME. CO-OPERATION OF EVERYONE A NECESSITY. “I have no doubts about the success of the loan, but it is desirable that subscribers should be spread over an area as wide as possible,” observed Mr J. Robertson, M.P., in addressing a representative gathering in Masterton last night. He said the country was not up to scratch regarding the financial side of the war effort. In Canada and Australia, said Mr Robertson, a higher proportion of the population subscribed to war loans than in New Zealand, yet in this country the national income was better spread than in any other country in the world. Seventy-five per cent of the national income was made up of the people in the £5OO a year group. It was necessary to get the co-operation of that group to make the loan a success. The loan served a two-fold purpose in financing the war and syphoning off the surplus spending power. Mr Robertson referred to the dangers of inflation, and said it had to be prevented if only for the sakes of the men fighting the battle of the British Commonweatlh. Inflation would hit the working man the hardest. Mi’ Robertson said the secretary of the Wairarapa Trades Council, Mr F. Cole, would be calling a meeting regarding the part to be played by the unions in the loan campaign. Mr P. J. Borthwick expressed confidence that the loan would be oversubscribed, and said he thought the spirit of co-operation which Mr Robertson desired from the workers was definitely there. Mr H. E. Tempter said if the Government had to resort, to taxation following me failure of the loan it would cost the working man more than what he might subscribe to the loan. By subscribing to the loan a man was simply postponing his spending power. If he was taxed that money was lost to him. Mr J. H. Cunningham referred to the splendid co-operation his staff had given in setting up a group, and Mr H. Nuttall, secretary of the Plumbers' Union, mentoined that although the Waingawa freezing works were in the slack season the response had been wonderfully good. In reply to Mr J. G. S. Thompson, the postmaster, Mr M. M. Simpson, said the Post Office had no facilities for the lodging of war loan bonds for’ custody.
Mr T. Jordan, who presided, said the community was indebted to Messrs Borthwick’s, Ltd., for releasing Mr J. D. O’Connor to enable him to act as organiser.
Mr Simpson suggested a house-to-house canvass by women’s organisations, and Mr J. Jamieson said displays in furtherance of the loan could be held. Mr O’Connor said the matter of displays, etc., were in hand. MASTERTON LIST CONTRIBUTIONS TOTAL £69,050. Liberty Loan investments received in Masterton to date total £69,050.
