Kaipara Seat.
Mr Samuel Swanton Green, farmer, of Mangatu, Donnelly’s Crossing, has been approached to contest the Kaipara seat. Mr Green, who is chairman of the Donnelly’s Crossing branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, states that should he stand he will do so as an Independent supporting the Farmers’ Union platform enunciated at the recent conference. Mr Rodney Coates, of Matakohe, brother of the late Mr Coates, states that he has not been approached by any elector in the Kaipara electorate with a view to his contesting the election. War Damage. War damage premium income for the year ended March 31 last amounted to £1,611,218, states the annual report of the War Damage Commission presented in the House of Representatives yesterday. Interest earned was £16,622, and after full provision had been made for claims and expenses a net balance of £1,620,149 was credited to the War Damage Fund, the total of which on March 31 last, including the balance brought forward from the previous period, was £2,495,240. Administration expenses of the Commission for the year were £6735, or less than one-half of one per cent of the net premium income. This exceptionally low working cost, the report says, had been made possible by the gratuitous services of insurance organisations. Members of the Commission also gave their services without remuneration. Twenty-nine claims for damage were lodged and settlements effected for a total of £955.
