WASTE ALLEGED

CONDITIONS AT SHOWGROUNDS. A. & P. ASSOCIATION DISCUSSION. “We have had no money and a good deal of trouble,” observed Mr C. C. Ruby at last night’s meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association, when referring to the occupation by the Crown of the Solway Showgrounds. Mr Ruby said it was hoped to receive a cheque for outstanding rent from the Public Works Department shortly. Mr T. V. Caverhill stated that doors and timber from the poultry pens had been carted to the rubbish tip and burned. It was necessary, he said, for someone to keep an account of the destruction that was taking place. Unlike New Zealand soldiers the present occupants had to have fires in each tent and the fires had to be kept stoked. Mr Caverhill said he had paddocks adjacent to the borough rubbish tip and he had seen good timber being burnt. It was wicked, he said. Mi’ Ruby said provision had been made for damage to property and the grounds and the Public Works Department had had its attention drawn to the amount of destruction. However, no matter what was done the occupiers were a law unto themselves. Mr R. H. Williams (secretary) said there were tons of coal on the Showgrounds and cords of heart totara for use in fires. There was no need for fence posts to be cut up.
