Miss Ivy Kyle, of Greymouth, is the guest' of Mrs R. H. Simpson, Dixon Street, Masterton. The Navy Office, Wellington, announced yesterday that Temporary Lieutenant L. H. Wiren, R.N.Z.N.V.R., of Lyall Bay, Wellington, had been killed on active service.
Mrs S. C. Humphries, of Pongaroa, is at present a patient in the Dannevirke Hospital. The death occurred this week at Pahiatua of a well known resident in the person of Mr James Charles Hunter, at the age of 79 years. Recently the staff of Messrs C. E. Daniell, Ltd., took the opportunity of making a presentation of an easy chair to Mr J. Stalker, who had recently completed 40 years’ service with the firm. Many references were made to his sterling personal qualities and he was, on behalf of all, wished a long and happy retirement. The appointment of Mr John William Macdonald, Deputy-Commission-er and Secretary Government Insurance Department, as Commissioner, was announced yesterday by the Minister in charge of the department, Mi’ Wilson. Mr Macdonald succeeds Mr W. E. Arnold, who will retire at the end of the present month. There was a large attendance of Kopuaranga settlers at the funeral of the late Mr William Bryans, which took place on Wednesday afternoon. The Ven Archdeacon E. J. Rich conducted the service and many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. The pallbearers were Messrs H. McKenzie, F. Pain. R. Goodgame and R. D. McKenzie.
The funeral of the late Mr William Dutch took place yesterday afternoon, there being a representative attendance of mourners, including several members of the Second N.Z.E.F. Many floral tributes were sent by sympathisers. The Ven Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiated. Messrs R. Weston, H. J. Rayner and D. Slater (representing the Second N.Z.E.F.) and J. Greig acted as pall-bearers. For 20 years. overseer and for 40 years an employee of the Hutt County Council, there was probably no man better known in the district than Mr John Walter Cudby, who died at Upper Hutt on Saturday last. Mr Cudby, who was the son of the late Mr Charles Cudby, a well-known settler in the district, was born at Lower Hutt in 1860, and lived the whole of his life within a mile or two of the Hutt River.
A request has been made to Mr Rodney Coates, of Matakohe, to consent to nomination for selection as a candidate for the Kaipara seat, left vacant by the recent death of his brother, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. Mr Coates is very well known in the North and has had long experience of local body affairs. He has been a member of the Otamatea County Council since 1916 and its chairman since 1917. Mr Coates, who is at present in Auckland, said last night that he could make no statement about his position.
