M. ANDRE MAUROIS
CRITICISED BY FRENCH REVIEWER. FOR LEAVING ENGLAND IN 1940. M. Andre Maurois has produced his memoirs in the United States. The reviewer of “France,’ the French daily published in London, writes:— “In the abundant literary production which has flowered on the capitulation of France, M. Andre Maurois will have had the merit of creating something new: there were souvenirs, memoirs, works of historical pretention, and novels, but M. Maurois has invented the book of excuses. “To excuse himself, such in fact is the object of the 600 pages recently published by the author of “The Silences of Colonel Bramble.” Anglophile by profession, M. Maurois has written the indulgent recital of his lifefrom his first success. And, having informed the reader that he was, right from the cradle, first in everything, at school, at college, in the barracks and in the workshop, he feels he can thus attenuate the criticism of those who manifested astonishment when, in June, 1940, at the moment of danger, he was the first to leave England.”
