CARTERTON
LABOUR PARTY CARD TOURNAMENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at the Labour Party’s card tournament on Saturday evening. The prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mrs A. Jensen 1, Mrs F. Jackson, Senr., 2. Men: Mr J. Lenihan 1, Mr Burney 2. Personal Items. Mrs Wellington, of Masterton, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday, and was the guest of her aunt, Mrs C. Holland, Garrison Street, Carterton. Mr C. Holland left for Palmerston North today to visit his sister, Mrs Potts, who is seriously ill. Mrs L. Goodin, of Kent Street, Carterton, has left for Te Kauwhata, Waikato, where she will stay with her son over the winter. Before leaving Carterton she was entertained at a 500 party at her son’s residence in Wyndham Street.
Mrs H. Armstrong, of Palmerston North, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs C. K. Goodin, Garrison Street, Carterten.
Mrs Wisteski, of Opiki, is a visitor to Carterton, and is staying with her sister, Mrs C. K. Goodin.
The high esteem in which the late Mrs E. W. Allen was held was shown by the very large cortege at her funeral yesterday afternoon, there being over 100 motor cars. A service was conducted at the residence by the Rev. W. F. Stent, who afterwards officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs W Wilson, A. E. Reid, L. Rayner, C. Jensen, Junr., J. Taplin and C. Jackson. There were many beautiful wreaths. Members of the Carterton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union were present and deposited a sprig of rosemary in the grave as a symbol of remembrance. The funeral of Mr George Augustus Parrant, who died at Wellington Hospital on June 7, took place yesterday afternoon at the Clareville cemetery. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. Parrant, H. Parrant, K. H. Reid, M. Walker, C. Parrant and D. Parrant. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. R. Grice. Mr and Mrs Oscar Andersen have left for New Plymouth to attend the poultry show.
Returned Services Association. The annual general meeting of the Carterton branch of the Returned Services Association will be held in the Masonic Hall tonight, at 8 o’clock. i Social Gathering. The Dalefield Hall was filled last evening when residents of the district entertained A.C.2 Garth Parker, son of Mr and Mrs M. J. Parker. The dance music was provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra. Extras were played by Mrs H. Bain and Mr L. Mclntosh. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss James and Miss O'Keefe and r spot waltz by Mr Pawhai and Miss Betty Parker. Mr L. J. Fairbrother, on behalf of the residents of the district, wished the guest of the evening the best of luck and health in the service and asked him to accept a wristlet watch and writing companion. On behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs Hughes presented A.C.2 Garth Parker with a parcel of woollen comforts. The recipient suitably replied. REGENT THEATRE “TARZAN’S SECRET TREASURE" “Tarzan's Secret Treasure,” the best of thd Tarzan series of pictures, will be finally shown tonight. The chief roles are portrayed by Johnny Weissmuller, Maureen O’Sullivan and John Sheffield.
