TRIBAL EXECUTIVE MEETING OF DELEGATES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Tribal Executive was held at Papawai on Sunday, there being a large number of delegates present, besides members of the Maori race. Among those present was the wife of the late Lieutenant-Colonel Tiwi Love, who is also the Queen of Rarotonga. Lieutenant Jackson addressed the gathering with reference to the enlistment of members of the Third Maori Battalion. Mr P. H. Paku (chairman), Lieutenant Manihera and Mr S. T. Potangaroa welcomed Mrs Love. The chairman referred to the great loss the Dominion had sustained in the deaths of the late Mr J. G. Coates and Sir Alfred Ransom and he moved a motion of condolence to the relatives of the deceased. Mr Carter spoke in support of the motion which was carried in silence, those present standing. Lieutenant Manihera gave a report of his activities since the last meeting. He referred to the work of the newly constituted committee which were considered very satisfactory. With reference to production the officer mentioned that this was proceeding satisfactorily. The next meeting of the executive is to be held in August. Personal Items. Miss K. Riwai has returned to Christchurch after having been the guest of Mrs J. Riwai. Messrs T. Tomoana and J. Hill were visitors to Pirinoa at the weekend. Mr J. Carter is visiting relatives in the Otaki district. Euchre Party and Dance. The Pirinoa Tribal Committee held a most successful euchre party and dance on Friday evening. The hall was packed. The dance, to music for which was supplied by Mita Carter’s West Coast Dance Band, was much enjoyed. Extras were played by Te Maari’s Band. The Monte Carlo for children was won by Misses Duggan and Herangi, and that for adults by Mrs Taylor and Mr Tawhiri.
The prizes at euchre were won by Mrs Thompson and Mrs J. Riwai (Featherston) in the ladies’ section, and in the men's division by Messrs Mutt and King. The consolation went to Mrs Jacobs and Mr Judas. The produce stall did a good business, everything being sold. Mrs Tilson (mystery envelope) and Master John Warren (dinner) were the winners of the competitions. Poi dances by the Pukio juveniles were much enjoyed, while the action songs and hakas by local talent were well received. The supper arrangements were capably handled by a committee of ladies.
The committee are thankful to the residents of the district for gifts and donations, which in a large measure greatly assisted in the success of the gathering. The committee met at the weekend find it was decided to hold an entertainment at South Featherston at a date to be arranged.
