POSITION IN WAIRARAPA STEPS TAKEN TO ELIMINATE BLACK MARKETING. MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. The Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Marketing, in a statement today announced that after discussions between the North and South Wairarapa Egg Marketing Committees and the Internal Marketing Division, it had been decided to proceed with the stamping of eggs sold by way of wholesale in the North and South Wairarapa Egg Marketing areas. The stamping mark would consist of the name of the floor and a number in code which would enable the Internal Marketing Division to identify the eggs sold by retail in that area. The Minister stated that a fair percentage of “black marketing” was operating in these areas, and was preventing the Internal Marketing Division from making a fair ration to all retailers. The sale of eggs by way of wholesale other than through the licensed distributors was an offence against the regulations, and it was with the object of eliminating this practice and taking action against offenders that this procedure of stamping was being adopted. It was clear that any eggs not bearing the accredited stamp would not have come through the legal channels. Mr Barclay added that he wished to make it clear to the public that the stamping was not intended to indicate the grade and quality of the eggs, but was merely a guarantee that the sale had been made through the legal channels.
