OBITUARY
MRS E. W. ALLEN The death occurred yesterday at her residence, North High Street, Carterton, of Mrs E. AV. Allen, a highly respected resident. She was born at Mannings Road, Belvedere, 62 years ago. After her marriage she resided at West Taratahi for 40 years, where along with her husband she was associated with dairy farming life. She took a very keen interest in the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and was a past president of the union. At the division’s flower shows she was a prominent prize winner. Mrs Allan, who was the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. T. Manning, of Carterton, was educated at Belvedere and Clareville schools. She leaves her husband and a grown up family of five daughters and one son. The daughters are Mesdames Barlow (Plimmerton), L. Rayner (Moreton Road, Carterton), C. Jensen, Junr (Waihakeke), J. Taplin, (Jeans Street, Masterton), C. Jackson (High Street, Masterton) and the son is Mr R. Allen (Carrington). She is also survived by three sisters and two brothers —Mesdames P. Lorenzen, Lower Hutt, D. A. McPhee, Carterton, Gravestock, Palmerston North, and Messrs Bert Manning, Hastings, and Robert Manning, Lower Hutt. The funeral will leave her late residence, North High Street, tomorrow, after a service commencing at 1.30 p.m., for the Clareville Cemetery. Personal. The news of the death of Flying Officer J. Vernon Gustofson cast quite a gloom over Carterton and district, where he was well known and esteemed. He was born at Waihakeke and afterwards moved from there to Rongomai, in the Forty Mile Bush district. He was a keen footballer and golf enthusiast and at one time represented the Bush district in representative fixtures. He was secretary of the Carterton Golf Club, Wairarapa Gun Club and the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society. He leaves a widow and a daughter and is also survived by his mother and father, who reside in Carterton. Two other brothers are in the Air Force in New Zealand and his youngest brother is in the Intelligence Division in the Middle East. His two sisters are Mrs R. F. Taucher (Carterton) and Mrs L. Jensen (Carterton). Much sympathy is expressed to his relatives-in their great loss. Tomorrow evening the residents of the district will tender a social gathering to A.C.2 Flight Patrol Garth Parker. Cyclist Meets with Accident. Miss Joan Hedley, of Kent Street. Carterton, was cycling home last night when she was run into by a motorist travelling in the same direction. She was thrown heavily to the road and received facial and other injuries. She was taken to her home, where Dr Morton attended to her injuries. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Carterton School Committee will be held tonight. REGENT THEATRE “TO THE SHORES OF TRIPOLI.” The brilliant technicolour drama, “To the Shores of Tripoli,” will be finally shown tonight, the leading roles in which are taken by John Payne, Maureen O’Hara, Randolph Scott and Nancy Kelly.
