CARTERTON
SOCIAL GATHERING MR & MRS THORNE ENTERTAINED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Belvedei’e Schoolroom was packed last evening when a social gathering was tendered Mr and Mrs E. G. Thorne. The time was spent in dancing to music supplied by Miss Mary Herrick. Extras were played by Miss I. Thomas and Mr C. E. Miller. Novelty dances were won by Mr M. O'Reilly and partner and Mr K. Kennedy and Miss B. Simmonds. Mr A. H. Callistor, chairman of the directors of the Belvedere Dairy Company, spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr and Mrs Thorne and asked Mr Thorne to accept an eiderdown and Mrs Thorne a handbag. Mr Thorne suitably replied. Mr Callister welcomed Mr and Mrs Joe Parker, who have taken over Mr Thorne’s farm, to the district. Shop Day. St. Mark's Ladies’ Guild will hold a shop day in the State Theatre, Carterton, on Friday, June 11. Luncheon and afternoon tea will be provided. Among others there will be a second-hand" clothing stall and a “white elephant” stall. Personal Items. Advice has been received in Carterton that Pilot Officer J. V. Gustofson has been, killed in an air raid. He was a highly respected resident of Carterton and was popularly known throughout the Wairarapa. He leaves a wife and daughter, as well as his mother and father.
