TERRIFIC BATTLE
FOR AIR SUPREMACY ON EASTERN FRONT RED AIR FORCE MEETING CHALLENGE. STRONG FIGHTER DEFENCE OF KURSK. LONDON, June 3. In Russia, the Red Air Force and the Luftwaffe are lighting a terrific air battle for superiority all along the front. Fighting is particularly intense in the Kuban area, along the Donetz, at Kursk and before Leningrad.
Big German aircraft formations have attacked the Russian, lines north-east of Novorossisk. Russian aircraft have replied by going out in hundreds to attack the German defences covering the base of Novorossisk. The enemy is reported to have concentrated nearly 1,000 aircraft in this area. Kursk took one of the heaviest raids a Russian town of its size has ever had. Owing to the strong Soviet fighter defence, the Germans failed in an attempt to smash up this great Soviet base and communication centre. On the ground the Russians have beaten back a determined German attack which was aimed at the key town of Velikiye Luki.
