CHINESE DRIVE

IN THE YANGTSE VALLEY CLOSE THREAT TO VITAL JAPANESE BASES. SOME ENEMY FORCES ENCIRCLED. LONDON. June 3. The Chinese counter-offen-sive in the Yangtse valley has made further substantial progress and now threatens two big bases which the Japanese used for their abortive push towards Chungking.

Chinese troops driving north from Hunan have crossed the border into Southern Hupeh and surrounded an enemy base there. They have reached the southern bank of the Yangtse River opposite Ichang. It is reported that 4,000 Japanese have been surrounded further down the river and that 1500 Japanese were killed yesterday by a strong force of Chinese and American planes, which attacked enemy barges loaded with troops trying to reach the north bank of the Yangtse. The Chinese have recaptured Changyang, 12 miles south of Ichang, and have occupied Chinchang, 35 miles below Ichang.
