SPLENDID EFFORT
OF BRITISH WAR WORKERS PRAISED BY MR BEVIN. SENSE OF MASTERY OVER ENEMY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 1. Twenty-five million people out of Britain's total population of 46,000,000 are engaged in some form of national service, the Minister of Labour and National Service, Mr Bevin, recalled tonight in a broadcast from a factory in connection with the second anniversary of the "workers' playtime” radio programme. Mr Bevin said that the real purpose of his talk was to express gratitude to the men and women of this countrv for the magnificent response to the call to develop the great war industries. "We have come a long way," he said. “In the first year of war we produced very little. In the second year, in spite of being alone, we showed material development, and in the third year we began to see big bombers, more powerful guns and more ships, and we are beginning to feel a sense of mastery. “Now, in the fourth year, the offensive takes place, and we feel we art moving forward to the destruction cl’ the enemy. None of this would have been possible had it not been for the millions of men and women who have given everything to their jobs-how-ever small the component they ere making or how large the weapon they arc completing. “How difficult it seemed when we were called on to produce an army, air force, navy, and merchantile marine of the size operating today. It seemed that out of our population it could never be possible. You have a right to feel proud yourselves. “My message tonight is: ’Carry on, Don’t let up, for the prize is worth winning. In one word, it is victory.”
