RED CROSS SOCIETY
MASTERTON SUB-CENTRE., WORKING GROUPS ACTIVE. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton sub-centre of the Red Cross Society held yesterday, Mrs Tolhurst presided. The joint council of the war purposes committee wrote thanking the Red Cross Society for work done in connection with hospital visiting. A letter from headquarters thanked the hospital and knitting groups for goods received. A cable was received from Sister Chisholm, of the 3rd General Hospital, acknowledging the. receipt of a case of hospital comforts from the Masterton sub-centre. This case contained fruit cakes, shortbread, sweets, special tinned foods, books and hospital goods. Mrs Thompson tendered her resignation as a convenor of the Sewing Group. The resignation was accepted with much regret and it was decided that the splendid service rendered by Mrs Thompson be placed on record. The Centre wrote stating that the annual levy to the Centre had been apportioned and that the quota for the Master ton Sub-Centre was £72 19s 4d. It was decided that a cheque for the amount be sent to the Centre.
It was reported that all the working groups had carried on their usual activities during the month and had also been busy with preparations for the shop day. The members of the occupational handcrafts for soldiers were now installed in their new room at the R.S.A. Club and were delighted with their new quarters. Gas heating had been installed, Mr Haycraft had undertaken to overhaul the electric saw bench and fit a safety cover and Mr Wagg had adapted a’sewing machine stand into a treadle fret saw. Two tables and chairs had been given for use in this room.
As four Masterton returned soldiers are at present in the Wellington Hospital undergoing treatment it was decided that a hamper of food comforts be sent to them from the Masterton sub-centre. The matter of packing this hamper was left in the hands of Mrs Tolhurst.
It was moved that a donation of £lO be sent to the Mission to Seamen for sick members of the mercantile marine.
In connection with the recent shop day a vote of thanks was passed to all those who had worked so hard and whose efforts had been instrumental in raising the splendid total of over £260. Junior Red Cross members from Lansdowne and West schools were thanked for their help, and also those members of the Transport Service and the Misses S. Harrison and M. Thomson who cleaned the shop and prepared it for the stallholders.
