AMERICAN RED CROSS
SERVICE CLUB ACTIVITIES SUCCESSFUL BARN DANCE LAST NIGHT. NEED FOR GIRLS TO REGISTER. The American Red Cross Service Club in Masterton was crowded last night, when a highly successful barn dance was held. The girls wore gay print frocks with colourful aprons and bows, and bales of hay piled around the walls gave a barn-like atmosphere to the hall. The floral decorations, for which the dance committee were responsible, were effectively carried out with bowls of bright-coloured flowers. A Marine Band played the music for the dances, and the programme was interspersed with hill-billy songs. Amusement was created by the activities of a sheriff and his deputies, who gaoled “offenders” on various charges. Messrs Gabby Magner and Dick Lauf, of the Marine Corps, were efficient M’s.C., and Mrs Betty Learmont and Miss Munsell carried out the duties of dance hostesses. Those present voted the dance a really good one. All girl dance partners are urgently requested to give their names to members of the dance committee before June 12. After that date girls who have not registered and received a card will not be admitted io the club. Girls may register on any dance night or between 12 and 2 p.m. during the day. Members of the canteen organisation need not register again. Members of the Victoria Lague, Wellington, presented a programme in the Regent Theatre, Masterton, on Sunday afternoon. Items were given by a Marine Band. Miss K. Buck, of the American Red Cross Field Office, arranged the programme. Tea was later served at the Red Cross Service Club. The tea was provided by the Defence Battalion’s Group recreation fund. It is hoped to present further entertainments each fortnight. They will be open to service men and one civilian friend may be brought by each service man. The programmes will alternate i with the tea dances. The next tea dance will be on Sunday.
