Bushman Killed by Tree. Roland Carl Sunborn, a bushman, was killed at Kotemaori when crushed by a falling tree. He was a married man employed at a sawmill in the district. Meat Price. The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board advises that the lamb, wether, and ewe schedules in the South Island are increased by one-eighth of a penny per lb from and including May 31. Fatal Injuries.
James Tipton, aged 20, a trucker employed in the Kamo mine, died in Whangarei Hospital yesterday morning from injuries believed to have been caused by the handle of a trucking brake striking him in the chest.
Borough as Milkman.* The Waipukurau milk supply having been threatened owing to two of the three town milk suppliers going out of business, the Waipukurau Borough Council is taking over the supplying of milk within the borough as from June 15. The coupon system is to be introduced.
A Worthy Object. The proceeds of a dance to be held in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, tomorrow night are for a worthy object, that of sending parcels to local Maori members of the Eighth Army. There will be an all-Maori orchestra and novelty dances will be held. The dance is being run by the Maori Interhouse girls’ team.
Football Boots Wanted. Members of the Air Force team which played a football match at the Carterton showgrounds on Saturday had to play in their ordinary service boots as they could not obtain football boots. Anyone having boots which are not needed are asked to leave them at the “Times-Age” office.
Harrier Movement. A suggestion has been made by a harrier supporter that to keep the movement going in the district, while so many members are overseas, the Masterton and Kiatere club members should run together. With that suggestion in view remaining members of the clubs and anyone interested, junior or senior, are invited to a run which will take place from the Masterton Park Oval at 2.30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
Sale of Cattle by Weight. A proposal that cattle for the local meat market should be purchased by weight instead of at auction was placed before a meeting of Southland cattle graziers yesterday afternoon at Invercargill. The meeting approved of the scheme and also supported a suggestion that the basic price for beef should be increased. The vote of the graziers was unanimously in favour of the scheme. Support was also accorded the Farmers’ Union representations for a basic price of £2 per 1001 b for prime beef, with weekly increments of 9d a week from the beginning of June to a maximum of £2 12s, and a reduction to the basis price in December.
