Tribute to Mr Coates.
At the morning service at the Masterton Methodist Church yesterday reference was made by the Rev. G. H. Goodman in a sermon on the “Inevitability of Death” to the passing of the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. Mr Goodman emphasised that not only was death no respecter of persons but it was also no respecter of time and man’s passing could not await the completion of his task nor could the plea of so much to do, so little done, avail. The late statesman had led a life of unabating activity in the service of the people and was in the midst of a task from which he could ill be spared but he was not permitted to bring it to a conclusion nor to see the consummation of his efforts. Tribute was paid to the willingness of the late Minister to set aside all personal pride, aspirations and partisan feeling in the time of crisis so that he might throw himself wholeheartedly and single mindedly into the common cause.
