The celebrated American artist and magazine illustrator, Lieutenant-Com-mander McCelland Barclay, has completed a portrait in oils of General MacArthur, without having seen the general during the painting, a Sydney message states. A second lieutenant was “promoted” to America’s highest ranking general for four hours to serve as a model. Pressure of work made it impossible for General MacArthur to pose for Barclay, who had been commissioned to paint a series of battle-station pictures. An officer was found whose build corresponded to General MacArthur’s, and he posed wearing the general’s full-dress uniform. The artist painted the head from an official photograph. The portrait was completed in 48 hours.
