SENATOR’S COMPLAINT
U.S.A. EXPENDITURE OVERSEAS. CONSTRUCTION OF AIRPORTS IN AUSTRALIA. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 27. A complaint that the United States had spent two thousand million dollars beyond the lend-lease programme in various countries on airport and other construction, because the army and navy had to pay for local labour, was made by Senator Tydings before the Senate Appropriations Committee. The Army had spent a hundred million dollars in building airports and housing in Australia, using 85 per cent Australian labour. “It occurred to me.” said Senator Tydings, “Australia might have furnished labour without payment therefore, inasmuch as we are building permanent airfields on the Australian Continent.”
