EKETAHUNA

RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF SUB-CENTRE. (“Times-Age" Special.) There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Red Cross sub-centre. The president, Mr M. Priest, presided. Accounts for £3 3s 7d were passed. Mrs L. T. Herbert, Centre Commandant, will be visiting Eketahuna on Saturday at 1.30 p.m. to inspect V.A.D’s. and a full attendance of members is requested. It was decided to donate £5O to the sick and wounded soldiers’ fund. The society undertook the collection of books for the 1943 Victory Book Drive. The Boy Scouts are to be asked to help in the collection. Nine members sat for their hygiene and sanitation examinations recently. All passed, five having gained honours. The following are the successful candidates: Elementary honours: Mrs V. Searancke, C. Raleigh and Miss Ashley, Miss Bissett. Passed, Mesdames C. Cooper and Sutherland. Intermediate honours: Mrs H. Higginson. Passed: Mrs McAlister. Advanced, Miss C. Wilson. A presentation was made to Miss Dorset, district health nurse, and Mr E. M. Simmers for valuable service given to the society.

Personal. Mrs and MNs J. Hornblow are visiting Auckland and Hamilton. Mesdames Crighton and J. Nielson, Vogeltown, Wellington, have been the guests of Mr and Mrs C. R. Cooper, Newman. Mr and Mrs R. Payne, Alfredton Road, who have been resident in Eketahuna for 13 years, are leaving at the week-end for Otaki, where Mr Payne has been appointed manager’ of a drapery business. The death has occurred in Te Awamutu of Mr Jefferies, a brother-in-law of Mrs M. R. Herbert, Alfredton Road. Twin D.F.C’s. Squadron Leader Colin Gray, D.F.C. and Bar, and ■ the late Flying Officer Kenneth Gray, D.F.C., Czechoslovak War Cross, were sons of Mr Gray, at one time electrical engineer to the Tararua Power Board and they attended the Eketahuna Primary School.
