VICTORIA CROSS
AWARDED TO LEADER OF GREAT ATTACK ON THE RUHR DAMS WING COMMANDER GIBSON. OTHER PARTICIPATING AIRMEN DECORATED. (British Official- Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) , RUGBY, May 27. The King has awarded the Victoria Cross to Wing Commander Gibson, who was in charge of the R.A.F. operation against the German dams on May 18. The citation says the operation was one of great difficulty and hazard, demanding a high degree of skill and courage and close co-operation between the crews of the aircraft engaged. Nevertheless a telling blow was struck at the enemy by the successful breaching of the Mohne and Eder dams. This outstanding success reflects the greatest credit on the personnel who participated in various capacities. Awards to the personnel of Wing Commander Gibson’s formation include five D.S.Os., four bars to D.F.Cs., ten D.F.Cs., two Conspicuous Gallantry Medals (Flying), one bar to the D.F.M. and eleven D.F.Ms, Flying Officer L. Chambers, of Karamea, is among those awarded the D.F.C.
