ADDINGTON MARKET
SATISFACTORY SALE FOR ALL CLASSES. i » (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 2G. At the Addington market the store sheep yarding totalled 2400, including 1100 lambs and 1000 wethers. Though the attendance of buyers was smaller than for some time a satisfactory sale was recorded for all classes. In the lamb section prices advanced by Is a head on recent rates. Ewes formed the bulk of the entry, one line making 27s 6d and others 23s 6d to 25s Id. Best wether lambs sold up to 24s Id. One line of 223 two-tooth Romney wethers from Nelson made from 27s 9d t0,28s 7d, and another of 490 four, six and eight-tooths from North Canterbury from 25s lOd to 26s Bd. A line of 144 two-tooth ewes made from 29s 3d to 30s. Good sound-mouth ewes sold up to 23s 6d, and culls and inferior ewes from 10s 6d to 16s 6d.
The fat sheep yarding was the same as last week, the bulk being again ewes. On the whole there was not much change in recent prices, but best quality sheep showed a hardening tendency. Best price for wethers was 39s lOd for a pen of two-tooths and that for ewes 29s lOd for a pen of soundmouth sheep. The bulk of the ewes were taken bv freezing buyers at schedule rates. The sharply declining prices of beef at recent markets assisted by the break in the weather drew a smaller entry of fat cattle than for a long time, the total being 372 against 660 last week, the bulk being med-ium-weight prime heifers and cows. These hardened as the sale progressed and were better than at last week’s sale by up to 30s a head. Heavier beef was up to 25s better and secondary cows about 20s. Best beef made to 44s per 1001 b.. good, 38s to 41s; medium, to 375; heifer beef, 36s to 395; secondary heifer beef, to 31s; ordinary cow to 255; all per 100 lb. The entry of porkers, though small, was larger than that last week. Competition by freezing buyers was more general, most of the leading works competing at the full schedule price of 8d per lb. Choppers were in short supply and met with the best sale for some time, all such pigs showing an advance of 20s a head. The bacon entry was again small and with keen competition last week’s drop of 3s to 4s a head was fully recovered, the average price per lb. being 8d to 8 ’/ad.
