GENERAL VON ARNIM
MOTHER AN AUSTRALIAN DISTINGUISHED AUTHORESS. FIRST COUSIN OF KATHERINE MANSFIELD. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) BLENHEIM, May 26. It has been indicated that General von Arnim, the Nazi commander-in-chief, captured in Tunisia, is half English, but it is not generally known that his mother was an Australian, with near’ relatives in Marlborough ana elsewhere in New Zealand. While they feel no satisfaction in their relationship with Hitler's lost panzer expert, these people have every reason to be proud of the notable literary association that has also been brought to light by local inquiries. Von Arnim's mother was Elizabeth Mary Beauchamp, daughter of Henry Herran Beauchamp, of Sydney. She married Count von Arnim and on his death Earl Russell. She wrote “Elizabeth and Her German Garden” and many other esteemed books. Brilliance in literature appeared also in Elizabeth’s first cousin, Cassie Beauchamp, known all over the English-speaking world as Katherine Mansfield.
