TOKIO CLAIMS
AMERICAN SHIPS ALLEGEDLY SUNK OR DAMAGED in' ALEUTIAN WATERS THREATS OF CRASH ATTACK ON AIRCRAFT. SENT TO BOMB JAPAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON. May 24. Japanese naval and air units yesterday, in the vicinity of Attu Isiand, according to a Tokio communique, heavily damaged an enemy cruiser, sank one destroyer and set fire to another. It is also claimed that a Japanese submarine unit in Aleutian waters, between May 12 and May 24, heavily damaged one battleship, one cruiser and two other warships. The Tokio official radio, in a broadcast to America, said: “As soon as you send bombers over Japan, squadrons or Japanese single-seater planes will take off and crash into every one of your bombers. There will be no bomber leave Japan in one piece.” The enemy radio repeated an earlier statement: “Your flyers on the road to Japan will be on a one-way thoroughfare to hell.” '
JAPANESE BOMBERS FIVE SHOT DOWN OVER ATTU. TWO AMERICAN FIGHTERS LOST. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, May 24. A United States Navy communique states: “In the North Pacific yesterday afternoon, sixteen Japanese twin-engin-ed bombers were attacked by six Lightnings over the eastern end of Attu Island, five being shot down. One American fighter is missing, and another was shot down, but the pilot was rescued.”
