NOTABLE AWARD
JAMES WATT MEDAL GOES TO AUSTRALIA. FOR WORK ON TURBINE ENGINES Mr A. G. M. Michell, of Melbourne, is the first Austrasian to receive the James Watt medal—the highest award for mechanical engineers. As he is living in Australia, it was received on his behalf by the High Commissioner for Australia in London, Mr S. M. Bruce.
The presentation was the occasion of an impressive ceremony at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London. The 8.8. C. broadcast it, with a descriptive commentary, in its short wave overseas service and it is believed that Mr Michell listened to it. The medal was founded by the Institution in 1936, to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of James Watt in 1736. The award is made every two years to an engineer, of any nationality, considered worthy of it. Mr Michell was singled out for his work on turbine engines. He has connections with an engineering company in New-castle-on-Tyne, England, and also with New York,"and has published a number of books.
