GERMANS FAIL
TO RECOVER LOST GROUND ON DONETZ COSTLY AND UNAVAILING ATTACKS. OTHER FRONTS COMPARATIVELY QUIET. LONDON, May 23. In Russia, Ihe Germans have made fierce but unavailing efforts to drive the Red Army forces from their re-cently-won Donetz bridgehead at Lisicharsk. Tin* enemy first, tried shelling, then, dive-bombing. I’nder cover of a strong barrage the Axis troops attempted to advance, only to be driven back to their fortified positions. Other fronts are comparatively quiet. Both sides are probing each other’s defences.
AIR ATTACK ON KURSK 65 GERMAN PLANES SHOT DOWN. AGAINST RUSSIAN LOSS OF TEN. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 22. Moscow radio announced this morning that a large group of enemy planes attempted to raid Kursk. They were engaged over the outskirts of the town by Soviet fighters, and anti-aircraft batteries opened a terrific fire. Only single planes penetrated the town and dropped bombs at random. Some damage was caused to dwellinghouses and there were a few casualties. According to incomplete figures, 65 German planes were shot down by Soviet fighters, including nine by the antiaircraft batteries. Soviet losses were 10 planes.
