BOMBING PLANES
OUTPUT IN UNITED STATES. GREAT GROWTH IN NUMBERS & WEIGHT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 22. Reports from Washington say the United States is producing more than 500 heavy bombers monthly. The vicechairman of the War Production Board, Mr Charles Wilson, disclosed that the production of 1000 monthly was scheduled by April, 1944, but some bottlenecks must be removed in order to meet the goal. The bombers were becoming steadily heavier. The average weight of a plane in 1943 was 30 per cent heavier than in 1942, and will rise to 60 per cent in 1944. Mr Wilson explained: “We produced twice as many planes in April, 1943, as in April, 1942, but the total weight was three times greater, and production in April, 1944, will be six times heavier, not including the output of new super bombers.”
