Included in the list of immediate awards to Second N.Z.E.F. personnel, announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, is the award of the Military Cross to Lieutenant J. L. Williams, whose next of kin is his wife, Mrs P. M. Williams, of Masterton. The Rev H. G. Taylor, who has been awarded the D. 5.0., is a former resident of Carterton. His mother, Mrs W. Taylor, now resides at Palmerston North. Lieutenant Williams was formerly first assistant at the Masterton Central School. At assembly this morning when the pupils were informed of .the award having been made to Lieutenant Williams the news was received with hearty applause. Lieutenant Williams was formerly a member of the Territorials.

The death ocurred last night of Mr Douglas J. Guiney, one of the outstanding sporting journalists of New Zealand. Mr Guiney was born in Christchurch 54 years ago. He was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, where he had a brilliant athletic career. He was a noted rifle shot, and during the Great War served with an artillery unit overseas for three years. He started his journalistic career on the “Lyttelton Times,” and for the past 22 years he was on the staff of the “Dominion.” Mr Guiney, who was judge of the Carterton Racing Club, besides others, was a pioneer racing broadcaster. He leaves a widow, four sons and a daughter.
